A few weeks ago, I asked a couple of my friends, Karen and Joe, to be my models for a street light inspired photo shoot. They agreed and we set up a date. It was 8:15pm when we started on April 14, 2009. The day had been beautiful and the evening proved to be the same.
I began the shoot trying to incorporate as much of the sky as I could before the clouds were completely lost to the black sky. Here is one of my favourite photos from the night.
I love the colour of the sky behind the warmth of the street lights.
I wanted to ensure that the details of the road, wires and street poles were strong elements of the photo. But I also wanted to make sure that my friends were dark enough to be a silhouette. My ISO was 500, my aperture was 2.8 and my shutter speed was 1/2 sec.

The most challenging aspect of the evening was focusing on my subjects. Another challenge, although not mine, was keeping Joe and Karen from moving. Since I wanted the shutter to be open for a longer period of time, they had to remain very still to avoid blurring. This photo is a great example of blurring-gone-right!
I had Karen and Joe stand very still in a walking position. Joe had placed his heel on the road, which I think looked great. However, it was difficult for him to keep his foot still while the photo was being taken. His foot moved creating a small blur. I think that it looks fantastic and really makes it look as though they are walking.
I love photographing sincere hugs. I asked Karen and Joe to hug and they snuggled right into each others arms. I love the soft glow that the street lights created around their hair. I think that it adds great texture to the photo. I am also very happy with the darkness of their bodies and the richness of their shadow.
My ISO was 160, my aperture was 2.8 and my shutter speed was 1.3 sec. I also bracketed down -1.3 steps.
Thank you to Joe and Karen for donating your time, for my creativity. I greatly appreciate it!
